How It's Made - Our Crafting Concept

In offering no less than six crafting options, the Robinson of England concept gives our clients the greatest understanding and insight into how Chesterfield sofas and indeed any sofas and chairs can be made.
"Not all Chesterfields are created equal"
There are varying techniques and materials involved in the crafting process.  For us there are two fundamental elements to creating a piece of furniture: aesthetic and crafting.  Both will ensure timelessness and outstanding quality.
Crafting Manner One

Our Manner 1 is identical to those of the 19th Century.

The seat, back and arms are completely loose coil sprung, with 8 point hand tied loose coil steel springs. This helps the build stay strong and never lose it’s shape.

Only using natural materials, the fillings consist of horse tail and coconut fibre before being lined with organic lambswool.

Each and every fixing is hand tacked and the solid beechwood Tenon Jointed frame sits on our beautiful hand turned Walnut legs.

Our Manner 1 also comes with the finest hand dyed British leather or an alternative pre-dyed leather or fabric of your choice.*

Our Manner 1 is the amongst the world’s finest hand crafted furniture and takes up to a month to craft.

Crafting Manner Two

Our Manner 2 is almost identical to our Manner 1 but not fully hand tacked. In this instance we hand tack the seat and outside leathers.

The seat, back and arms are completely loose coil sprung, with 8 point hand tied loose coil steel springs. This helps the build stay strong and never lose it’s shape.

Only using natural materials, the fillings consist of horse tail and coconut fibre before being lined with lambswool.

The solid beechwood Tenon Jointed frame sits on our beautiful hand turned Oak legs.

Our Manner 2 also comes with the finest hand dyed leather or an alternative pre-dyed leather or fabric of your choice.*

Our Manner 2 is the amongst the world’s finest hand crafted furniture and takes up to a month to craft.

Crafting Manner Three

Our Manner 3 option is a blend between the traditionally crafted 19th century pieces, and an ever so slightly modern approach.

Just like our Manner 2, the seat, back and arms are completely loose coil sprung using 8 point hand tied loose coil steel springs.

The key difference between our Manner 2 and 3 is that we use a rubberised hair and loose horse hair to fill. We will also staple the fixings in place of the hand tacked technique. However we do still hand tack the outer leathers.

The beechwood frame is dowelled, glued and screwed and sits on hand turned beechwood feet.

This option comes with a hand dyed Italian/Scandinavian leather or a pre dyed leather/fabric of your choice.*

Our Manner 3 option remains one of the finest crafted pieces of furniture.

Crafting Manner 4

Our Manner 4 offers two options which offer key elements of the various approaches to traditional craftsmanship.

Option 1

The seat is fully loose coil sprung using 8-point hand tied loose coil steel springs, however the back and arms are not. We then use a rubberised hair and loose horse hair to fill.

Option 2

The seat, back and arms are completely loose coil sprung using 8 point hand tied loose coil steel springs. We use use a medium density foam and line the inside with pure cotton felt.

We will also staple the fixings in place of the hand tacked technique. However we do still hand tack the outer leathers.

The beechwood frame for both options is dowelled, glued and screwed and sits on hand turned beechwood feet.

This option comes with a hand dyed Italian/Scandinavian leather or a pre dyed leather/fabric of your choice.*

Manner 4 is a great option to blend the elements of the more traditional crafting techniques.

Crafting Manner 5

Our Manner 5 option is the slightly modern approach to traditional craftsmanship.

The seat is fully loose coil sprung using 8-point hand tied loose coil steel springs (not to be confused with ‘sprung units’), however the back and arms are not.

We use use a medium density foam and line the inside with pure cotton felt.

The beechwood frame is dowelled, glued and screwed and sits on hand turned beechwood feet.

This option comes with a hand dyed Italian/Scandinavian leather or a pre dyed leather/fabric of your choice.*

Manner 5 is our modern approach to crafting yet still un-paralleled in terms of the high street or specialists.

Crafting Manner 6

Our crafting manner 6 is certainly our most modern crafting option.

The seat is either webbed or we use serpentine springs. Fillings are a very good medium density foam and line the inside with cotton felts.
