Chatham High Back sofa: Jim Dickens’ Arezzo Fabric

British Prime Minister 1766-1768

Our Chatham is a picturesque John Howard and Sons style high back sofa which mirrors the great designs of the 18th century.

The sofa takes its name from the 1st Earl of Chatham, William Pitt the elder, who was a British Whig statesman who led Britain during the Seven Years’ War. Historians have described Pitt as “the greatest British statesman of the 18th century” due to his single-minded devotion to victory over France, a victory which ultimately solidified Britain’s dominance over world affairs.

The Chatham sofa shares the greatness that Pitt created. At the turn of the 18th century, Howard and Sons was arguably the most highly thought of upholsterers in the country. Their designs and acutely crafted designs would be seen across most stately homes around Britain, a truly royal piece. Our Chatham took inspiration from Howard and Sons. This particular Chatham was made with a high back at the request of the client, and upholstered in Jim Dickens’ Arezzo fabric. A very suave, classy finish to this stylish design with two plump filled duck feather and down cushions. The frame, as always, is made from solid beechwood with a loose coil sprung seat for added longevity.

We also craft this with a low back.
